But before adding another machine, it's worth watching what happens to the material between machines.
I've walked through facilities where production equipment was capable of producing significantly more than the plant's actual output. The bottleneck wasn't the machinery.
It was everything happening around it.
Parts were waiting to be moved. Operators were walking to retrieve material. Forklifts were crossing production areas. Work-in-process was accumulating between operations.

Material flow was.
What Is Material Flow?
Material flow is simply the movement of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished products through a manufacturing operation.
Ideally, that movement should be predictable and efficient.
Material enters the facility, moves through each required process, and exits as a finished product with as little unnecessary handling as possible.
Every extra movement introduces time, labor, and opportunity for damage.
Look for the Waiting
One of the easiest ways to identify material-handling problems is to watch the process without looking at the machines.
Where does material wait?
Where does it get moved twice?
Where does an operator leave the workstation?
Where are forklifts required to enter production areas?
Where does work-in-process pile up?
These observations often reveal problems that aren't visible in production reports.
A machine may show 90% utilization while the overall process remains inefficient because material spends hours waiting between operations.
The Hidden Cost of Walking
Walking is one of the most overlooked expenses in manufacturing.
Suppose an operator walks 100 feet every cycle to retrieve a component. At 30 cycles per hour, that's 3,000 feet every hour.
Over an eight-hour shift, that becomes nearly 4.5 miles.
Now multiply that by several operators.
None of that movement improves the product.
A properly designed material cart, point-of-use rack, conveyor, or workstation can eliminate much of it.

Answering those questions allows the material-handling system to be designed around the operation instead of forcing the operation to work around the equipment.
Reduce Touches
One of the simplest measurements in material handling is the number of times a product is touched.
Every time a part is picked up, moved, repositioned, stacked, or unloaded, labor is being consumed.
Reducing the number of touches usually improves both productivity and product quality.
Less handling also means fewer opportunities for parts to be dropped, damaged, contaminated, or misplaced.
Final Thoughts
Before investing in another production machine, take a close look at how material moves through the facility.
You may discover that your equipment already has more capacity than you think.
The opportunity may simply be getting material to the equipment more efficiently.
Good manufacturing isn't about building the most complicated solution. It's about building the simplest solution that works reliably for the next twenty years.
